Segovia is a city full of ancient history, which origin dates back to Celtiberian tribes, who built it in a craggy rock made of limestone. The height of the cliff is over 1000 meters above sea level. The silhouette drawn on the Castilian clean sky has been compared, from the 16th century, to a ship made of stone, waiting for the two rivers that flow on its feet (Eresma and Clamores) to flood the valley, so it can sail to the vast sea of the plateau.
|
|
Even to this day the origin of the city remains a mistery. We know for sure that it was inhabited in the pre-roman era. Rome left its indelible mark by building of the Aqueduct. Repopulated in 1088, Segovia gathers centuries of brilliant History. The textile industry and wool trading made the city thrive, layered in two physical and social levels: the fortified city, inhabited by noblemen and clergy, and the suburbs – in the Eresma and Clamores banks – where the productive activity was developed. During the 12th and 17th centuries, this prosperity brings about the building of many churches, convents, strongholds, palaces and other elements belonging to the monumental compound we can still enjoy nowadays. The economical decadence paralyses to a certain extent the artistic development, but favours the preservation of its monumental Patrimony. From the last decades of the 19th century, the city restores its remarkable legacy, and nowadays it is shown proudly to the visitor.
A city to enjoy calmly and to return to, Segovia. It has received every official appreciation for its artistic and monumental richness, for the transparency of its light, for the openness of the atmosphere wrapping it, and for the lushness of the encircling wood that, in contrast to the ochre colour of dry stone, enhances it as a green oasis
A Real Orden issued in a remote October the 11th of 1884, named the Aqueduct Monumento Histórico Artístico (Historical-artistic monument). This honourable name was given, as years passed by, to several monuments of the city. Finally in 1985 the UNESCO culminated the process in the naming of Segovia as a World Heritage Site.

TOUR GUIDES
MONUMENTS
Aqueduct |
Unique and magnificent, the Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the most amazing masterpieces that Romans spread all along their vast empire. It was built to carry the water from the mountains to the city. Symbol in the crest of the city, it was legendarily said to be built by the Devil.
The hypothesis of its construction point to the first century, on the Flavian era, and also to the eras of Nerva or Trajano. But the lack of the exact data of its construction does not prevent the Aqueduct to be in the head of the classification of the best civil engineering works in Spain.
Extraordinary piece of work, where usefulness coexists with harmony and beauty, has worked for the city until just recent times. Through the ages, it has barely suffered any modification.
Only during the attack of Al-Mamun from Toledo, in 1072, 36 arches were damaged. They were restored in the 15th century by Fray Juan de Escobedo, monk from the monastery of El Parral.
From the ancient times, we can find two vaulted niches in the higher point, which probably contained pagan god's images. In the era of the Catholic Kings, they were replaced by the images of Saint Sebastian and the Holy Virgin. Under the niches, could be found an inscription in brass letters, relative to the foundation of the aqueduct. Nowadays, only the holes where the characters were attached remain.
SOME FACTS:
Its total length, from its origin in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, is 14.965 meters long. Its arches: 958 meters long. Its highest point: 28.10 meters. Total number of arches: 166.
Masterpiece of modern hydraulic engineering, it was built with huge blocks of granite stone from Guadarrama, and the method used is called "a hueso", which means that there are no concrete or mortar between the stones. They maintain its equilibrium by using an ingenious weight balance. Water ran on the channel at its top, and crossed the city underground until it reached the Alcazar. It was named Monumento Nacional (National Monument) in 1884 and World Heritage monument in 1985.

Cathedral |
Its complete name is Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and San Frutos.
Following the late Gothic Style, the construction begun in 1525 with the non-profit collaboration of segovian people, under the direction of the architects of the family Gil de Hontañon, but it was not consecrated until 1768. This cathedral worked as substitute to the Old one, which was placed in front on the Alcázar, and destroyed in the War of Las Comunidades in 1520.
On the outside, facing west, we can find the main façade, known as Door of el Perdon (Forgiveness), where we find a sculpture of the Holy Virgin by Juan Guas. On the outside it is set the Enlosado, a paved space used nowadays as a scenario for housing cultural activities. The tower, one of the most notable elements due to its height, has been inhabited until mid 20th century by the toller, and is a privileged sightseeing point to the city.
The Door of San Geroteo is opened to the south. He was the first bishop of the city. Facing north, we may find the Door of San Frutos, built in honour of the patron of the city at the beginning of the 17th century.
It has a three-nave floor-plan with transept covered with a dome, drawn by Pedro de Brizuela in the 18th century, with a semicircular apse on the head and an ambulatory, surrounded by chapels.
The grandeur and harmony on dimensions defines the inside spaces, with its beautiful glass stained windows from the 14th century, the choir, which preserves the Gothic set of chairs of the old cathedral, the baroque organs from the 18th century, the collection of grilles or the pulpitum, guarding the relics of San Frutos.
We can find 18 chapels on the inside, decorated with important paintings and sculptures. Some notable examples are the Romanesque Calvary inside the Chapel of El Sacramento; the triple painting of Ambrosius Benson and the altarpiece of La Piedad, from Juan de Juni, in the Chapel of El Santo Entierro, nearby the Door of San Frutos; and the Cristo Yacente from Gregorio Fernández.
The Museum of the Cathedral houses notable art pieces from Pedro Berruguete, Sánchez Coello and Van Orley; and the Cathedral Archives preserves more than 500 incunabula, among them, the Sinodal de Aguilafuente, the first book printed in Spain.

Alcazar |
Its silhouette appears as an imaginary ship over the confluence of the rivers Eresma and Clamores, laced by the scenario of ochre and blue colours of the plain and the mountains. Before entering, you will find a beautiful garden, housing the monument for the Heroes of the Spanish Independence War, Daoiz and Velarde, made by the segovian sculptor Aniceto Marinas. On the left, you can come in the Casa de la Quimica (House of Chemistry), built in the Era of Enlightenment, and used as investigation centre by the chemist Louis Proust.
A deep moat with a drawbridge gives us entrance to a fortress situated in a privileged place, which was possibly inhabited from the Celtic era. The castle, built over the remains of a Roman fortress, was successively transformed from Alfonso VI (11th century) to Felipe II (16th century). It became an Alcazar – Royal residence – in the 13th century; it obtains its final gothic appearance in Juan II and Enrique IV ages. It worked as State Prison in the 18th century, and became Royal College of Artillery in 1764. Its restoration has been continuous after the serious fire that took place in 1862, that almost destroyed the castle completely. Nevertheless, in 1882 and being Alfonso XII the king, the reconstruction works started, lasting until the present time by the Patronato del Alcazar, which has restored coffered ceilings, friezes, altarpieces and walls. Almost the entire building can be visited, including the rooms devoted to the History of Artillery, General Military Archives of Spain.
In the northern angle we can see the small tower of Alfonso X 'the wise', where the king studied the firmament, and the Tower of Juan II, 80 meters high, decorated with beautiful esgrafiados and twelve turrets. The visitor can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy the magnificent views of the city and the Pinarillo (wood that contains the Jewish cemetery), the church of Vera Cruz, the medieval neighbourhoods of San Marcos and Zamarramala, and the quarry from where most of the limestone used in building the Cathedral was taken.
Inside the monument and around the Patio de Armas - where periodically chamber music concerts are housed - and the Patio del Reloj, we can find the rooms. Particularly notable for their beauty, we must pay attention to the Ajimeces Room; the Galera Room – which coffered ceiling has been recently rebuilt – the Throne Room – with an outstanding mudejar ceiling; the Chimney Room; the Cord Room; the Pineapples Room; the Royal Chamber; the Queen's Dressing Room and the Chapel. Above everyone, the Kings Chamber stands out, containing an extraordinary coffered ceiling made of golden hexagons and rhomboids, and a curious frieze displaying 52 sitting images, polychromed, of the Kings and Queens of Asturias, Leon and Castilla from Don Pelayo to the Queen Juana I.

MUSEUM OF SEGOVIA – Casa del Sol (House of the Sun)
Museum of Segovia |
The Museum of Segovia, previously Regional Museum of Arts, dates back to 1842. It was made up of pieces of art coming from the convents closed by the Desamortizacion of Mendizabal which were not considered to be driven to the current Museum of El Prado.
After being placed in several buildings, the City gave the State an old building, the old slaughterhouse, working for that purpose from the time of Enrique IV, so-called Casa del Sol (House of the Sun). The exhibition is distributed in six rooms around the courtyard, where pieces of all ages are displayed. The first room, working as an introduction, is devoted to the territory’s geology and landscape, which explanations are supported in a huge model of the region and an audiovisual production.
In the second room we may find objects that belong to the period between Prehistory and the Late Middle Ages, including sections devoted to Roman world and the Aqueduct.
Among the collection, it’s worth highlighting two Celtiberian verracos (huge statues of bulls or wild boars), Roman mosaics, Visigoth enamels or a broad series of wooden paintings from castilian artists from the 15th and 16th centuries; along with interesting collections of coins moulded in the segovian Mint, glass pieces from La Granja, religious sculptures, engravings from Durero, Rembrandt and other authors, and contemporary paintings.

HOUSE-MUSEUM OF ANTONIO MACHADO
House-Museum of Antonio Machado |
It was back in 1919 when the poet Antonio Machado came to Segovia for occupying a chair in the High School of the city. From that moment on, until he left Segovia in 1932, he rented a room in a house of the Desamparados street that, as time went by, was bought by the Academy of History and Arts of San Quirce, turning it into a permanent remembrance of the poet.
It’s a museum made for the most intimate evocation. The humble house remains as nude as it should have been when Antonio inhabited the place, and still preserves the same furniture. The room he occupied remains untouched, and from the walls, as for materializing his absence, hangs a collection of old pictures, along with paintings, drawings and posters which wear the signature of artists such as Rafael Peñuelas, Jesus Unturbe, Alvaro Delgado or Pablo Picasso.

It was created in 1824 by the Bishop Manuel Castro Alonso, and set up in several rooms attached to the cloister. One of them is the Chapel of Santa Catalina, where we will find paintings of Flemish and Spanish painters. Either anonymous, as the Maestro de los Claveles or the Maestro de la Santa Sangre, or known, as Bernard van Orley, Marinus van Reymerswale, Pedro Berruguete, Luis de Morales, Alonso de Herrera or Antonio Maria Esquivel (the last one is the author to the historic painting "San Francisco de Borja ante Carlos V"). The collection on this room is also composed of notable pieces of gold and silver work, as well as the processional monstrance, made by the silver work master of the 17th century Rafael Gonzalez, native of Toledo.
Inside the Chapter House, covered with a marvellous renaissance ceiling that, according to the legend, is decorated with the first gold brought from America, stands out a magnificent series of tapestries, complemented with the ones hanging from the stairs leading to the Library. In there, it is set the best complement to this museum, the Archives, which holds documentation from the 13th century on, such as the library donated to the Cathedral by the Bishop Arias Davila, ancient songbooks, incunabula, and two priceless editorial jewels: the Cancionero de la Catedral, anthology of songs from Castilla and other European regions in the late 15th century, and the Sinodal de Aguilafuente, printed in Segovia by Juan Parix in 1472 and, therefore, the first book to be printed in Spain.

CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES:
The magnificent temple is an actual sample of Castilian Romanesque art from the 12th century. Defined by a triple arcade of columns, three apses, and a mudejar tower occupying the space of the dome, covered by a baroque roof and rebuilt in the 14th century. We must pay special attention to the carved capitals, the marble plaque displaying the image of Saint Martin outside of the apse, and the four column-statues of the façade. On the inside, the visitor can find a triptych from the Flemish artist Adrian Isembrandt, several paintings of the primitive Castilian artist known as the Maestro de las 11.000 virgenes, a sculpture of a Lying Christ attributed to Gregorio Fernández and one of San Francisco from Pedro de Mena.
Following the cobbled paving of the narrow San Nicolas street, we end up in a quiet spot where we find the Church of la Santisima Trinidad, built in mid 12th century over an older temple, belonging to the 11th. Its structure displays one nave and is headed by a simple apse. The tower was built over the transept. The arcade faces south. On the inside, the visitor can find a Gothic chapel belonging to the Del Campo family, and important works of art by Ambrosius Benson or Giacomo di Pontormo. This is one of the best-preserved temples of the city, with a humble and genuine interior housing important works of art.
SAN JUAN DE LOS CABALLEROS CHURCH
Belonging to the late 11th century, is one of the oldest churches in Segovia and was probably built over a pre-Christian basilica, from which it maintains the religious space distribution. The name of San Juan de los Caballeros (of the Noblemen) comes from the fact of housing the burials of the Nobles Linajes (Noble Lineages) of the city.
In 1905 the artist Daniel Zuloaga bought and restored it, using the church as his home and workshop on ceramic, and lately into the museum of the Zuloaga family, displaying a collection of ceramic pieces and documents. The building and museum belongs in the present time to the country. In the encircling garden and enclosure, commonly known as "Los Zuloagas", cultural activities are housed in summer.

This church was the result of late Romanesque architecture, presents a three-nave structure and an apse modified in the baroque period. The arcade and the tower, declared National Monument in 1896, were added in the 13th century. The tower is considered one of the most beautiful among the Romanesque ones. After suffering a fire in 1896, it was dismembered and rebuilt in the early 20th century, replacing its baroque slate roof with a tiled one. All these difficulties did not lessen the elegance of the tower, an unmistakable milestone in the silhouette of the city.
Inside the church, it’s worth highlighting a Gothic Calvary, brought from the church of Santiago, which has not survived to these days.
One of the most important temples, model to segovian Romanesque churches because it contains all the characteristics of their kind: Islamic influence (decorations and vaults on caliphal style), arcades used as meeting points (instead of the colonnades of squares), and slender belfries drawing a peculiar profile on the city. Built following the example of the Cathedral of Jaca, its tower still preserves the remains of a former mozarabe building.
Near to the Aqueduct we can find a hidden jewel of the Romanesque architecture. Built in the 13th century, it has one of the few sculpted tympanums of the segovian Romanesque architecture, a slender tower and a collection of magnificent paintings in its apse, dominated by a Pantocrator, and displaying scenes about the Passion of Christ and the life of its patron saints.

On the way to Zamarramala we can find the church of Vera Cruz, founded by the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre in 1208, although the legend attributes its establishment to the Order of the Temple.
The building, with a twelve-sided floor-plan distributed around a central room, has three apses. It is inspired in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and its nave is very sober and thrilling, wrapped in a mysterious veil. The two floors are decorated with groin vaults, Muslim style, and still show remains of wall paintings. The church guarded in the past a relic of the True Cross (known as lignum crucis), and belongs presently to the Order of Malta.

Convent of the Corpus Christi (Former Main Synagogue)
It has been a sacred place for two religions: Christian and Jewish. It was used as synagogue until 1410, when it was seized from the Jewish community.
The praying room, built in the 14th century, has a rectangular floor-plan divided into three naves, with late additions of the presbytery and the choir. The nave division is solved by two rows of five horseshoe arches each. We can marvel at the beauty of its capitals.
It was the principal of the five synagogues the Jewish community had in the city. It contains notable altarpieces moved from the dissolved convent of San Francisco.
It is peculiar to find such a mixture of both religions combining Christian decoration (composed on various altarpieces devoted to San Francisco de Asis) and paintings, and the architecture of the former Main Synagogue of the Jewish Quarter of Segovia.
The building suffered a fire in 1889, and was completely restored in 2004, recovering its original appearance. Nowadays, it houses a convent of the Order of Saint Clara.

Free-will offeringEnrique IV, who had in the building a hunting palace, donated it in 1455 to the Franciscan monks. When that order left in 1488, it was occupied by nuns belonging to the Order of Saint Clara. Tracing an angle with the Plateresque façade, decorated with the praying sculptures of the Catholic Kings, we find the doorway of the temple, carved in renaissance Gothic style on three layered arches: segmental, ongee and clover-shaped, under Moorish eaves.
Inside the temple we can find two pieces of art that justify our visit to the monastery: a spectacular coffered ceiling closing the Main Chapel, and a breathtaking altarpiece unique in its genre, a Flemish piece from the 15th century displaying, through diverse scenery, the Passion of Christ.
On the monastic part opened to visitors, we will able to visit the Vestry, the Throne Room and the Chapter House, covered with amazing coffered ceilings; the Refectory, containing a beautiful pulpit decorated in the mudejar style; and the Gothic-mudejar cloister. Three triptychs made on pipe sand from the Utrecht school, and several collections of documents, sculptures, paintings and furniture complete the visit.

MONASTERY OF SANTA MARIA DEL PARRAL
This monastery, built by command of Enrique IV in 1447, though the legend attributes its foundation to his Court favourite Juan de Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, is composed by a conjunction of buildings laid out around several cloisters (Gothic, Mudéjar and Plateresque-styled).
Deserted after the Desamortizacion of 1836 and victim to sacking, its rebuilding came after being declared Monumento Nacional in 1914 and being occupied again by monks from the Hieronymus Order in 1927.
Over the façade of the church, unfinished, we may highlight the coat of arms of the Pacheco family, and a graceful tower crowned by a Plateresque crest, made by the segovian artist Juan Campero. The inside shows a single-nave floor-plant, tribune to the feet, lateral chapels and a polygonal apse, following the example of the typical constructions from the Hieronymus, built by Juan Guas.
Among the exceptional works of art inside this temple stand out the doorway to the vestry, the grave of Beatriz Pacheco and the Apostle Group surrounding the high apse windows, made by the sculptor Sebastian de Almonacid. We must also pay attention to the Plateresque set formed by the main altarpiece carved in wood, and the monumental sculptures of Juan Pacheco and his wife, Maria de Portocarrero, carved by the sculptors Juan Rodriguez and Lucas Giraldo.

MONASTERY OF THE CARMELITAS DESCALZOS
Located in the vicinity of the Sanctuary of the Virgen of la Fuencisla, and close to the Church of Vera Cruz, the convent is a brilliant example of the 17th century architecture.
A stone stairway, imitating the ascension to the Mount Carmel, drives us into the convent, founded by San Juan de la Cruz in 1586 over a previous Trinitary one, settled in 1206. The mystic writer ruled the monastery from 1587 to 1591 and his sepulchre is found on the inside, maybe too luxurious, in contrast with his humble and modest life. He loved to climb the carved path up the cliff, called Peñas Grajeras, where we can still find a little chapel advocated to Santa Teresa, spiritual shelter of the Saint. The old trunk of a cypress tree, that San Juan himself planted, are still rooted in the ground.
The remains of the Saint lay in a luxurious sepulchre, intended as a reflection not of his life, but of his grandeur as writer and mystic. It was designed by Felix Granada, and set in 1927, as homage to the two hundred years of his canonization.
Outside of this chapel the visitor will find, to the left, the modest church in which apse is displayed a modern and gigantic altarpiece, composed by nine paintings inspired on the poetic Works of San Juan de la Cruz, painted by the Mexican Carmelite Gerardo Lopez Bonilla, on the occasion of the visit of the Pope Juan Pablo II in 1982.

Belongs to the 13th- 15th centuries. It is a convent from the Order of St Domingo originally built in a Romanesque style (1218). It was rebuilt under the government of the Catholic Kings to honour St Domingo de Guzman with a convent, over the Penitential Cave of the Saint. We can see on the outside a Gothic doorway from the 15th century, work of Juan Guas. In the present times, houses the Instituto Empresa Universidad.
ART GALLERIES – EXHIBITIONS
Built in the 15th century, it belonged to the La Hoz family, whom family crest is shown repeatedly in the façade. The diamond peak decoration (from where the building takes its name) has a defensive and ornamental purpose. Tracing an angle with the façade, it opened in the ancient times the Door of San Martin, main access to the city fortress in medieval times, and demolished in 1883. In the present times, it houses the School of Arts and an art exhibition gallery.
