18th century. The town’s public prison until the early 20th century.

Its décor, which is very austere due to its former use, features the coat of arms of the Habsburgs on the façade, which has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

Among the inmates of the original prison was the illustrious playwright Lope de Vega, who was imprisoned there in 1577.

The entrance hall preserves the Romanesque doorway of a now-lost chapel in the province dedicated to Saint Medel.

Casa de la Lectura – Municipal Library with an extensive programme of reading and cultural events.
