Header image

16th century. Founded in 1586 by St. John of the Cross, who helped build it with his own hands. It contains his sepulchre, which was visited by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1982. A cypress tree, believed to have been planted by Saint John himself, is still alive by the shrine that was his spiritual haven. There are some remains of the Trinitarian convent of St. Mary of Rocamador (13th century).The convent is currently run by the male order of Discalced Carmelites.
