The House of Abraham Seneor / The House of Andrés Laguna (Jewish Quarter Educational Centre)
Home to distinguished residents
Rabbi Abraham Seneor is one of the most important figures in the Castilian Jewish community during the Middle Ages and the most significant in the entire history of Segovia’s Jewish quarter.
Abraham Seneor spent the final years of his life in the Old Jewish Quarter, in a residence befitting his social standing. The house was one of the largest in the neighbourhood and was situated at one end of the Jewish quarter.
The house comprised two storeys, a courtyard and a cellar, and its main entrance faced Calle de la Judería Vieja, through which it is still accessed today. Structurally, the house was built from a group of dwellings that had stood on the site previously.
A decade after his death, Abraham Seneor’s house was divided into three dwellings, which is why today the buildings appear entirely separate, although they retain part of the original architecture despite the alterations made over the centuries.
One of these dwellings was home to the distinguished physician and humanist Andrés Laguna, who served as physician to illustrious figures such as Pope Julius III, Emperor Charles V and his son, Philip II.
The building currently houses the Jewish Quarter Educational Centre, a space dedicated to raising awareness of Jewish life in medieval Segovia.
